Use a HP Laserjet 1010 with a Synology DS416 under Windows

Abstract: You wish to add your HP Laserjet 1010 to a Synology DS416 but without using the Synology Assistant.

The reason why you might wish to add a printer manually to a Windows OS might be due to the reason that you wish to duplicate these settings to other PCs or couldnĀ“t install a 3rd party software like the Synology Assistant.

1.) Connect your HP Laserjet 1010 to your Synology DS416 via USB and switch it on

2.) Login to your Synology DS416 and go to the control panel

3.) Click on “External Devices” and then on “printer”

4.) You should see your HP printer in the list, select it and click on printer manager and then on “Set Up Printer”

5.) In the following menu select the option “Network Printer (Use print function only)” and press save. You can then logout from the Synology DS416.

6.) Download the Driver for the HP Laserjet 1010 (Windows Vista 32 bit / 64 bit) from the HP Website. If you run Windows 64 download the 64 bit driver.

7.) Expand the ZIP file and store all files in C:\temp

8.) Now got “Control Panel\Hardware and Sound\Devices and Printers” and press on “add printer”

9.) Choose “Add a network, wireless or Bluetooth printer”

10.) The wizard will try to find a printer but will not find one so press on “The printer that I want isnĀ“t listed”

11.) In the following screen choose “Add a printer using a TCP/IP address or host name”

12.) In the following dialog perform the following:

12a.) Change th Device Type to TCP/IP Device

12b.) In the Hostname or IP address field enter the IP from your Synology DS416 (e.g. 192.168.168.168), use the same in the port name

12c.) In the port name enter the port in the following format IP_<YourIP>_1Ā  (e.g. IP_192.168.168.168_1)

12d.) Deselect the “Query the printer and automatically select the driver to use” after that press next

13.) A new wizard is now trying to access the printer which will fail with the information “Device is not found on the network” & “Additional port information required”. Select custom and press on “Settings”

14.) In the custom port settings perform the following:

14a.) Change the protocol to “LPR”

14b.) In the Queue name enter “usbprinter1”

14c.) select the option “LPR Byte Counting Enabled”

15.) Press “next”

16.) Press on “Have Disk” and choose the temp driver you expanded

17.) Now select “Do not share this printer”

18.) Press on “Finish”
