Volume icon is missing and you couldn´t add it

Symptoms: You experience one of the following symptoms on a Windows XP-based computer:

  • The Volume icon is not displayed in the notification area at the far right of the taskbar.
  • When you try to add the volume control icon to the notification area, you receive the following error message:Windows cannot display the volume control on the taskbar because the Volume Control program has not been installed. To install it use Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel.

Therefore, you cannot start the Volume Control program and cannot adjust the volume and sound level settings of your computer.

Resolution: If you install Windows XP without a sound card the volume icon “software” isn´t added to your Windows OS. Therefore you couldn´t open mmsys.cpl (Sounds and Audio Devices Properties) and click to select the “Place volume icon in the taskbar” check box. You need at first to install the missing files. To do that do the following:

1.) Login on the OS as an administrator

2.) Go to the windows installation folder (e.g. C:\Windows)

3.) Open the inf folder (e.g. C:\Windows\inf)

4.) Find the sysoc.inf file and open it in the notepad editor

5.) Find the following line:

MultiM=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,multimed.inf,HIDE,7

and change it to

MultiM=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,multimed.inf,,7

after that save the file (do not close the editor and the file).

6.) Got to Control Panel -> Add and Remove Programms -> Add and Remove Windows Components

7.) In the “Accessories and Utilities” check the box for the “Multimedia” component and install it. You might be asked to put in the Windows XP installation medium.

8.) After installation go back to the sysoc.inf and re-add the string “HIDE” you removed. Save and close that file.

Microsoft published an similar article about that issue which can be found here. However this Microsoft article in the link do NOT solve the issue as mentioned here for a Windows XP 64 bit OS!
