How to cleanup the winsxs folder on Windows 7 (SP1)/ Windows 2008 R2 (SP1)

If you install the Servicepack 1 (SP1) on Windows 7 or Windows 2008 R2 there is a option to remove the Servicepack if there are issues with the system after the installation. This uninstallation option takes some GBs of space on the system. If you do not need the uninstallation option you can remove the files from the system and get back some disk space. The steps for that are quite easy.

To do that you need to start a command prompted via run as admin and type in the following command.

dism /online /cleanup-image /spsuperseded

This command removes superseded updates that are no longer needed after the installation of the servicepack 1. These updates are still kept on the system in case you want to uninstall SP1.

After running this command it won’t be possible to uninstall any service packs!
